Am I free?’ James Moloney uses the image of the osprey in several ways throughout the novel. The main technique in which it is represented, is the emotion of the characters finally feeling free in there own way. The first use of the image of the osprey is shown when Carl’s mother Kerry would always leave to go on one of her ‘holiday’s’. I believe that she went on these holidays to make herself feel free. To go away for a few days and leave her real life. But in fact she was never really free. Even on her holidays she always knew that she would eventually have to come back to reality, to her children. It’s not that she didn’t love her kids, she did. Perhaps she just couldn’t handle the stress of having to raise three children as a single parent or maybe just having them around was holding her back. During the prelude of the novel an unknown women gets on board a bus. She waits out of sight and sneaks on the bus when the driver is pre-occupied. She does not have a ticket and no one knows who she is. ‘The driver gunned the engine, commanding its throaty roar and the bus pulled away from the roadhouse into the sea of darkness. Only then did the women sit up and permit herself a smile’ At the end of the novel we find out that this women was Kerry. She was on her way back to her children when the bus she was on drowned into the ocean. In the moment that Kerry died, came the realization that she knew she was finally free. Sarah, Carl’s sister also finds the courage to leave and set herself free. Free from living her own life. Since Sarah was old enough to remember she would always have to depend on herself not her mother. When her mother would leave she would have to look after Carl and Harley as though they were her own. She states in the book ‘I’m only nineteen years old. I’ve got my own life. By the time Harley’s old enough to take care of himself, I’ll be thirty.’ Although I don’t agree with the way Sarah went about just dropping Harley and Carl off at their Aunt Beryl’s, I agree that she has her own life to live and she needed to escape. Consequently, setting herself free. The image of the osprey is shown in a major way within Carl. In many ways the osprey is a mirror image of Carl, in its appearance, pain, suffering, recovery and how it is set free. The image of the osprey is remarkably similar to that of Carl’s. It was a, ‘large bird, brown and grey, its head covered by a canvas hood.’ The description of the osprey matches some aspects of Carl’s body and personality. Carl was a large boy, miserable like the colour grey and he was shy like a hood covering his head. This was because he did not want to see what people responded to his body. He was ashamed of himself and the name his family had. Although by the end of the book Carl realizes that he finally has new friends and a new family. He finds that people like him and that they ignore that he is a Matt. ‘My name is Carl Matt. M-A-T-T.’ Carl screams his name out to the world, he doesn’t care anymore. Carl was free. Free of his worries, free of his fears. He is free from the curse that everyone says he and his family has. He could let go of his sorrowful past and be alive just like how the osprey let go of its painful past and began to fly once again. The way the osprey spread it’s wings and took its first beat against the wind symbolizes the emotions rushing through Carl when he finds out his mum truly did love him and Harley. The journey of the osprey mirrored Carl’s personal life. The osprey was set free in a way that makes Carl feel alive. The image of the osprey is used to represent the characters feeling free. It mainly symbolizes as a metaphor for Carl’s life. The osprey is free from being injured by people by being nurtured from Justine and Joy. Carl was also getting injured by people. Throughout his whole life people were hurting him. Kerry, his mother, Beryl, his aunt, his older sister Sarah and kids calling him names about him weight. When he met Justine and Joy, they saved him. It was right for George to shoot Lennie because Lennie died suddenly, was thinking about the dream, and was shot by a friend. By having George shoot Lennie, Lennie died suddenly. Curley would have shot him in his stomach area to have him die a slow and painful death. Lennie didn't have to suffer the pain of death and George wouldn't have to stand there and have Lennie ask questions about why he didn't do anything to prevent Curley from shooting him. When Lennie died, he was thinking about the dream. This made Lennie happy because he was "gonna tend the rabbits". That means his last thoughts before he died were happy ones of a farm, a little shack and rabbits eating the alfalfa. If Lennie didn't shoot George and Curley did, George would be thinking about how he killed Curley's wife and that Curley was really mad at him. That thought wouldn't make Lennie happy and Lennie knew that so he shoot him. Lennie was shot by a friend who cared about him. There was no hatred between them making the death non-revengeful. It was just as if Lennie was hooked up to a machine that kept him alive and George pulled the plug. He was bound to be shot anyways so it was better that George "pulled the plug" instead of Curley. Curley would have shot Lennie in the guts to have Lennie suffer a more painful and slow death. It shows that George really cared for Lennie.

Combat High Essay

In the essay â€Å"Combat High†, written by Sebastian Junger, shows how war can be both rewarding and exciting, but also how the war can be very costly at the same time. Many people look down upon war, but Junger does a very good job showing both the pros and cons about war. One of the ways Junger describes the war as rewarding is when he says that combat is â€Å"The only game in town.† meaning that this is what soldiers live for. Since war is a life or death situation, the soldiers take it very seriously. This explains why the soldiers were cheering when the man on the hill stopped moving. They weren’t necessarily cheering because the man died, but like Junger said, â€Å"People think we are cheering because we shot someone, but we were cheering because we just stopped someone from killing us.† Just imagine if you had people shooting at you constantly. I’m sure you would be feeling a little relieved knowing that the guy on the hill wont have a cha nce to shoot at you again. Another way, in which Junger displays the war as rewarding, is the relationships the soldiers build with each other. They build such meaningful relationships that Junger explains the relationships as romance, but not all relationships sexual. Junger also describes the war as exciting. Not all people would think war is exciting, but to the soldiers, it is a different story. Like Junger says, â€Å"†¦ war is life multiplied by some number that no one has ever heard of.† Although war may be rewarding and exciting, but it also can be extremely costly. When the soldiers end up going home, they often have mental problems. Junger explains why when he says, â€Å"†¦ they’re normal young men with normal emotional needs that have to be met within the very narrow options available on that hilltop.† After reading â€Å"Combat High†, I had many different thoughts going through my mind about war. I understand where Junger is coming from as he gives examples of how war is exciting and rewarding, but I don’t necessarily think the same way as him. Not saying that he is wrong by any means. An example of this is the part when all the soldiers start cheering when the guy dies. To me that seems wrong. I understand they are cheering because now that guy can’t kill them, but to me that is just morally wrong to cheer after someone has suffered that bad.  Maybe that’s why I wouldn’t be a good fit to be in the army. I don’t think I could ever be the same if I saw some of the things these so ldiers have to see. The soldiers have to be emotionally strong. They build such good relationships with each other that it would be really hard to see someone who is basically family to you just get shot right in front of you. After reading this story, I give anyone who has been in war great deal of sympathy and props for them doing the things they had to encounter. I never really thought about all the hardships soldiers end up going through during war, until reading â€Å"Combat High†.

However, their affair could have been prevented or at least ended by Jocelin by stopping the building of the spire. Jocelin does not choose to do this but sacrifices many of his characters in order to get the spire built. He married Goody to Pangall to satisfy his own feelings and therefore set up Goody to unhappiness and her want for Roger. Therefore it is sin that brought the relationship together which shows the reader that the relationship is not a good one that may end in tragedy. Golding presents this sinful relationship by firstly talking about the individual characters of Goody and Roger; he talks about it as a major evil and talks about the pregnancy from the relationship. In chapter one the reader is given the view that Goody Pangall is a religious character and therefore we feel that she would not sin. Goody Pangall is a daughter in God. Goodys name also suggests that she is good instead of evil because of the Good in Goody. However, as we already know the relationship she has with Roger is not a good one but is evil. This contrast highlights the evil in Goody more because it is not expected. The reader can see indications of evil in Goody though because she has red hair. Red symbolises evil. Jocelin speaks of Roger as if he does not like him but the reader sees that Roger is the better person. For example, Roger listens to his workers for when talking to Jocelin he says, sometimes the army does the leading. However, Roger is a Pagan and therefore we see him to be evil. Therefore as Roger is evil and Goody is good when the two combine it gives and unusual relationship, but shows the kind of deception that is in the church. Things are not always what they seem. Goody has these feelings because of how her marriage with Pangall was formed; she cannot help but have feelings for Roger. Roger is a sexual character as he compared to a bull. Therefore he is attracted to Goody because as we have seen from earlier descriptions she is a very attractive person and Rachel cannot have children just as Pangall cannot give Goody a child. Rogers sexuality cannot be shown with Rachel because he cannot have a child that way. When Goody gets pregnant, Jocelin says that the blood of childbirth never ceases to flow showing how bad this relationship is and how unpleasant and painful it is for other characters to see such as Pangall. This relationship is wickedness. The pregnancy is a major evil but Jocelin mentioned that God wanted the relationship, for the spire however he did not want the pregnancy. When Jocelin mentions that God was prepared for the relationship for the spire, he actually meant himself but was trying to justify is with Gods will. Instead of the pregnancy being a good thing, because of the sign of new life, it is made to be evil. It can be compared to Mary and Joseph to show how bad it is. Mary became pregnant but however was still a virgin and carried Jesus. Therefore she was good and was chosen by God. Goody was married to Pangall however became pregnant by Roger. Their relationship can also be linked to the fall as female sexuality is shown to be tempting to males. Men would slide down the church like the fall of a mountain. This shows the fall of men from the church to hell. The four columns would open apart like a flower, the flower being the woman and then the men would fall because they tempt them. Goodys sexuality tempted Roger as Eve tempted Adam to eat the apple. The eating of the apple was wrong showing again that the relationship is wrong and that God will punish them. The relationship between Roger and Goody does not seem a very comfortable or equal one. Roger seems to be more powerful as she stood looking up at him. Goody is underneath him in power because she tempted him. However, she did indeed breakaway because she knows that the relationship is wrong therefore showing that the relationship is not a good one and is evil. They do not seem comfortable together but they feel they need to be together. She was still staring, her mouth open, showing that she is attracted to him however she also stood shaking her head showing she is ashamed and knows that it is wrong what she is doing. This relationship is an evil one which ends in tragedy of Goody Pangall dying and Roger ending up a drunk. This was Gods punishment to the sinful relationship. Golding presents the two characters as having their own fall however; it was created because of Jocelins sacrifice.
